The chance encounter between Roberto Palomba and Ludovica Serafini at the University of Architecture in Rome initially did not promise a great creative chemistry. However, as they honed their skills through their studies, they discovered a deep design affinity that would later lead to the foundation of their renowned studio in Milan in 1994. Collaborating with prestigious brands such as Kartell, Poltrona Frau, and Talenti, the two designers have brought their distinctive vision to the world of design, always placing quality, elegance, and research at the forefront.
The design method of "Palomba Serafini Associati" is extremely personal and almost intimate. Projects are conceived and embraced like children, the result of intensive research that translates into works that find recognition in society.
Examples of this unique approach can be found in the "Cliff collection" for Talenti and the "Waves collection" for Fiam. Palomba and Serafini's distinctive signature emanates from their ability to blend a contemporary vision of society and user needs with the cultural roots of design, enriching the present with the historical legacy of the industry.
In three decades of activity, the two designers have always applied the same modus operandi, faithfully following Richard Rogers' slogan: "from the spoon to the city." This symbolic phrase is used to emphasize the design philosophy that emphasizes the importance of taking care of the smallest and most intimate details, such as the spoon, and then applying the same attention and dedication to the creation of larger urban spaces, such as a city.
Their design methodology remains constant, whether it is conceiving an imposing architecture or a simple chair. Recent examples include the creation of "HiRay" for Kartell in 2021 and "Agos table" for Fiam in 2022.
The tangible demonstration of their genius is the vacation home that the two architects and designers have created within a 17th-century olive mill located in the province of Lecce. Here, they have enhanced the architectural features, such as the stone floor and high ceilings with traditional star-shaped vaults. They have enriched the spaces with furnishings with sinuous and soft lines, experimenting with lighting systems and iron fixtures made by local artisans. Some of their greatest masterpieces reside in this dwelling. It is truly a "place full of poetry," as they have described it themselves.
Although their journey has taken them from designing spaces to conceptualizing objects, the challenge of creating wallpaper has remained a priority. In fact, driven by the desire to experiment and share their vision, the couple has also dedicated themselves to this area of design, achieving further success. A notable example is the creation of the "Gabbia" wallpaper for Wall & Decò in 2021, using the decoupage technique. In the background, an dreamlike world unfolds, while in the foreground, a story is revealed that stages the fauna and flora in a harmonious dance.
Roberto Palomba and Ludovica Serafini embody the very essence of Made in Italy designers: professionals who analyze, study, and respond to the needs of an ever-evolving society, paying attention to architecture, context, and the individual object. In an era where environmental impact and the desire for well-being dominate trends, Palomba and Serafini stand as masters of their craft, with a vision that harmoniously blends the past and the future.
